Organised, developed and managed two highly successful conferences on 'Informatics & Data Visualisation' [in analytical sciences] on behalf of the Chromatographic Society - the first was the first to deal with this subject matter in the UK, sponsored by major international companies and attended by over 90 scientists - the second, equally successful was held in March 2008. Both were held at the Intech Science Centre in Winchester, now also a planetarium.
Developed an extensive network of professional contacts, in the UK, Europe, Canada, Brazil and the USA.
Presented at international conferences and seminars in Europe, the States, Canada and Brazil. Contributed to patents, scientific literature and books. Occasional reviewer for scientific journals including the Analyst, Journal of Environmental Chemistry and Beitrage Zur Tabakforschung International.
Former Steering Group Committee Member of the United Kingdom Analytical Partnership initiated by the Department of Trade and Industry, Royal Society of Chemistry and the laboratory of the Government Chemist to promote and develop analytical science in the UK.
Chosen to lead an international team of scientists, in a multidisciplinary research project to quantify, identify and evaluate the significance of free radicals in tobacco smoke. Identified and engaged suitable research partners in the UK and Germany. New procedures developed and presented at International Conferences.
Previously a member of the ‘New Project Evaluation’ and the ‘International Analytical Strategy’ teams and briefly ‘Global Analytical Facilitator’ for British American Tobacco, where many innovative analytical techniques and ideas were introduced; for example work to counteract counterfeit and to troubleshoot manufacturing problems.
Initiated project to remove target compounds from tobacco using supercritical fluid extraction technology at pilot plant level in the UK and Germany. Developed and coordinated programme of work leading to a Patent.
Previously a member of a EU Thematic Network to promote the application of supercritical fluid extraction throughout Europe.
Managed and coordinated radiation protection for BAT R&D and production facilities within UK and Ireland for over twenty-five years. Interaction with Company safety personnel, and externally with the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) the Environment Agency and the Health & Safety Executive. Also a brief spell as R&D Safety Officer; initially implementing COSHH
